The United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs offers a free visitor center and a self-guided tour, but access beyond the visitor center has separate requirements. Start by deciding whether you only need the Hosmer Visitor Center or want to enter designated public areas of the Academy.

  • Visitor center: Free, open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with holiday closures.
  • Time at the visitor center: Allow 1–2 hours for the galleries and exhibits.
  • General access: A 30-day pass may be requested by eligible visitors; it does not allow entry to controlled areas.
  • Falcon Stadium: On the Academy campus.
What Visitors Can See

What Visitors Can See

The Hosmer Visitor Center is the Academy’s main public-facing stop, with galleries about cadet life and views of the campus and Front Range along its self-guided tour route.

The General Bradley and Zita Hosmer Visitor Center sits just outside the North Gate at 13303 True North Road, USAF Academy, CO 80840, and you do not need base access to enter it.

Inside the 34,000-square-foot center, interactive galleries cover the 47-month cadet journey. Its atrium features tetrahedra measuring 40, 45 and 50 feet, as well as a suspended glider; a 3,000-square-foot gift shop and team store are also on site. The Academy estimates that exploring the galleries and exhibits typically takes 1–2 hours.

For the self-guided tour, allow two to three hours. Its paved out-and-back trail extends one-third mile in each direction, with benches and views of the Academy and Front Range.

Visitor Access and Identification

Visitor Access and Identification

The visitor center is outside the North Gate, but access to other parts of the Academy depends on your eligibility and the areas you plan to visit. Non-Department of War-affiliated visitors may request a 30-day general access pass online or in person at the Pass and Registration Office.

The pass is limited to designated public and recreational areas; it does not authorize entry to the Cadet Area, airfield, training areas, operational facilities or other controlled areas.

Online preregistration for that pass is limited to U.S. citizens with a valid, unrevoked or unsuspended Real ID driver’s license. The pass is uploaded to the barcode on the registered license, and each visitor may have only one active pass at a time.

Visitors who cannot use that process must go in person to the Pass and Registration Office with identification accepted by TSA. A passport or passport card works as standalone identification; other identification must be accompanied by a non-Real-ID document.

Non-U.S. citizens must visit the office in person with a sponsor or with a preregistration link and passport for the associated event. Visitors 17 and younger do not need identification or base-access registration, though minors who drive must show a valid driver’s license at the gate.

The Pass and Registration Office is outside the South Gate, off Interstate 25 at Exit 150. Regular service is Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m.; the office closes on federal holidays and every third Tuesday of the month for training.

The Academy advises arriving one to two hours before your required access time because waits may be long. All people seeking access undergo a criminal background check, and access may be denied under Academy-specific regulations.

Recreational or visitation access hours are 5:30 a.m.–10 p.m., and the 30-day general pass applies only during those hours. Check the official Air Force Academy site before you go, since entry requirements and operating details can change.

Getting Around the Academy

Getting Around the Academy

For a visit centered on the Hosmer Visitor Center, use the North Gate approach from Interstate 25, Exit 156. Free parking is available at the center, and the visitor center itself does not require base access.

For destinations beyond the visitor center, make sure your pass covers the area you intend to enter and stay within the areas authorized for you. A general access pass does not open controlled parts of the installation.

If you have a state-issued disabled-parking placard, bring it to access designated parking in the Cadet Area, Visitor Center, Planetarium and Falcon Stadium; wheelchairs are available for use inside the Visitor Center only.

Falcon Stadium and Event Visits

Falcon Stadium and Event Visits

Falcon Stadium is on the Academy campus, so event visits may involve access restrictions beyond the stadium itself. Events with more than 1,500 attendees may have security cordons that limit parts of the installation to certified personnel only.

For stadium-specific parking and game-day planning, the Falcon Stadium guide to parking and game day covers those details.

Planning a Visit from North Colorado Springs

For a straightforward campus plan, begin at the Hosmer Visitor Center, then leave time for the self-guided trail if you also want views of the Academy and Front Range. If your plans include other public areas, sort out the pass process before setting off and leave room for possible waits at the Pass and Registration Office.

Falcon Stadium is about 46 minutes by car from WoodSpring Suites Colorado Springs North - Air Force Academy, a place to stay while you explore the campus.

Check the Academy’s current access rules and visitor-center schedule before your trip, especially if you are visiting on a holiday or planning to attend a large event.
